Treatment for molluscum is usually recommended if lesions are in the genital area (on or near the penis, vulva, vagina, or anus). If lesions are found in this area it is a good idea to visit your healthcare provider as there is a possibility that you may have another disease spread by sexual contact. Molluscum contagiosum is an infection caused by a poxvirus (molluscum contagiosum virus). The result of the infection is usually a benign, mild skin disease characterized by lesions (growths) that may appear anywhere on the body. Within months, Molluscum contagiosum typically resolves without scarring but may take as long as 4 years.

Molluscum in Adults – Molluscum Tips Molluscum contagiosum is a relatively common condition that causes small bumps, known as mollusca, to appear on the skin. It is caused by a virus that can be spread by skin-to-skin contact and through sharing towels, shower mitts or blankets. Adults and teens are more often infected by molluscum through sexual contact and tend to have genital lesions. Children from age 1–5 are most commonly affected with lesions appearing on the face, neck, arms, armpits, and hands (but usually not the palms). Patients with eczema may be more severely affected by molluscum.
